Lucid Motors has a secret weapon against Tesla: one of its former engineers

Posted By: Unknown - 22:48:00

Lucid Motors is among the latest wave of electric car startups to spring out of California with a sleek, dynamic, attractive sports car model. Under direction of the former Tesla Model S lead engineer Peter Rawlinson, the Lucid Motors CTO, there’s a feeling that Lucid has the internal knowledge to tease Tesla’s grip as maker of the ultimate electric luxury sedan — at least when I put on those rose-colored VR glasses.

THE CAR IS SLATED TO GO INTO PRODUCTION IN LATE 2018

At the auto show, I met with the Lucid leadership responsible for launching a new car company, including Rawlinson and chief designer Derek Jenkins, who is the former head of design at Mazda, and credited with the redesignedMazda MX-5.

Rawlinson’s role at the company is to rethink the whole architecture of the automobile, an engineer’s dream job. “I believe that the electric powertrain can unlock doors to an array of designs that hasn’t been achieved before,” he said. The company’s approach is to make a midsized sedan that feels like a massive, roomy flagship vehicle. “We have a car that’s a little bit bigger than the Mercedes-Benz E class, but it’s actually less long, narrower, and lower than a Tesla Model S and it’s got the interior space of a long wheelbase Mercedes-Benz S Class,” Rawlinson said.

Lucid joins KarmaNextEV, andFaraday Future in the quest to steal some of Tesla’s shine. As a result, the electric horsepower wars are heating up, and Lucid is a contender with its claim that the car will make 1,000 horsepower and race from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds. This week NextEV has claimed that its car will make 1,390 horsepower. It’s all part of a race to build cars that run faster and longer on new and improved batteries.

Lucid, like many automakers, is looking toward the FIA Formula Eracing series to promote this goal. It will be the sole supplier of battery packs to the series in partnership with McLaren Applied Technologies and Sony to develop a battery system for seasons 5 and 6, scheduled to debut in two years. Rawlinson said that Lucid’s battery will last twice as long as the current battery, and run for the entirety of the Formula E Race.

Lucid, a name that could be a phonetic play on Tesla’s Ludicrous mode, has it roots in batteries. It was founded as a battery company Atieva in 2007, before the recent name change in October. (The revived California-based electric car company Karma also spawned from a battery company.)

Lucid Motors

“I joined the company to secure series C funding with the clarity of vision of doing something with the electric powertrain that hadn’t been done before,” Rawlinson told me. He says there’s no single lead investor, but four sources he can disclose that include Venture Rockefeller, the Japanese company Mitsui & Co, Chinese-owned Beijing Auto and Chinese company LeEco(also the primary backer of Faraday Future.) “We are first and foremost a California brand,” he said. “This is a cutting-edge Silicon Valley company.”

The car is slated to go into production in late 2018. In the first year Lucid plans to limit production from 8,000 to 10,000 units to maintain quality and then aspires to grow to an ambitious 50,000 to 60,000 units per year. Rawlinson says they plan to add additional platform derivatives on top of that number. That’s a lot of cars for a company that has yet to sell its first car.

Lucid Motors

Lucid plans to start with personal ownership model through direct sales model and to explore partnership with fleets. “The vehicles that we’re conceiving for Lucid are perfectly suited for the ride sharing space with large interior spaces and clean technologies,” Rawlinson said. “Maybe you don’t own it but you use it for a service. That shared usage can make a car more affordable, because someone could reach to an $80,000 car, if they are prepared to let the car being used and to have revenue from that investment.”

For now, Lucid has 330 people working in house. Soon the company will announce the location of a plant in the Western US. Lucid executives won’t say where, except that it’s nowhere near Las Vegas, where Tesla and Faraday Future are building factories.

After my VR tour and interview with Rawlinson, the designer Jenkins escorted me into a parking garage to see the prototype up close. “This is the closest I’ve ever been to a blank sheet,” Jenkins said, describing the design process. “As a car designer you’re given a fixed direction. In this case, this has been conceived as something new, it’s a true form and function synergistic exercise. The grille of the car will look different than anything else.”

The prototype was wrapped in a monochromatic geometrical patterns. Jenkins pointed out unfinished surfaces on the door panels, but the form gave me a general sense of proportion. The car will use polished aluminum and wraparound glass, he said. “We’ve combined attributes from different classes,” Jenkins said. “It wouldn’t be possible with an internal combustion engine.” He pointed out the thousands of lenses in the lights, developed with nanotechnology.

But what happens on the interior is key to making the car a hit. This is where Lucid has gotten most creative with the outfit of an electric powertrain by moving the driver and passenger position forward and pushing the passenger seating farther back, in an effort to optimize the possibilities of the car’s form. Pointing to the trunk, he says, “You can put golf bags in sideways.” Lucid’s user interface team is incorporating natural voice, and has tapped the talents of the lead developer of Amazon Echo.

BRAGI HEADPHONE REVIEW: FINALLY, WIRELESS EARBUDS WORTH BUYING

Posted By: Unknown - 09:23:00

After almost three yearsof buzz, one wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, and multiple product delays, German startup Bragi has finally made good on its promise: a pair of truly wireless earbuds that actually work. That resolution just didn't come in the form that we thought it would. Because I’m not talking about the Dash earbuds, which were a fantastic idea that now feel like a lost product. No, Bragi pulled this off with its second product: theHeadphone.

The Headphone was announced back in September, just days before Apple murdered the headphone jack and announcedAirPods. Despite its singular name, the $149 Headphone — which Bragi says will start shipping "any day now" — is another pair of wireless earbuds. They’re much simpler than the Dash, though. There’s no fitness tracking, no heart rate monitoring, no gesture controls, and no app. These are wireless earbuds that can stream audio from your phone, let you take or make a phone call, or access your phone’s digital assistant — and that’s it.

But there’s beauty in that simplicity. The Headphone is perhaps the idea Bragi should've gone with in the first place, because while the new earbuds certainly aren’t perfect, they’re miles better at performing their core task — audio streaming — than the Dash ever was. In fact, they're probably the best wireless earbuds I've used.

From the first day of Bragi’s Kickstarter, the Dash was all about fitting dozens of ideas into one product. It seemed almost too good to be true, and over the next two years that suspicion bore out — though the product was capable of wowing usin a few product demos along the way, the overall experience of the production version was a mess. Bragi tried to do too many things, and the result was that it did none of them well.

The most egregious fault, though, was that audio streaming was consistently unreliable. Your phone had to be in a front pocket or else the connection would constantly cut out, and even there it had trouble staying steady.

The promise with the Headphone was that, by stripping out all those extra sensors, Bragi would free up space for the Bluetooth radios to better communicate with the phone. And guess what? It worked. After a few days of using them with my iPhone 7 as my main earbuds I can say that they haven’t cut out once in any reasonable setting. I’ve put my phone in every pocket, thrown it in my bag, and no matter what the connection stays true. It took me setting down my phone and walking about 40 feet away before I started to experience hiccups.

This is a huge deal, if only because the biggest problem that plagues wireless earbuds is that Bluetooth connection between them and the phone. In all the ones I’ve tried, only two have passed this test: the Erato Apollo 7s, which were still far too expensive and one-dimensional, and the Samsung Gear IconX earbuds, which have terrible battery life and are only really an option if you’re a Samsung user.

Bragi solving the connection problem wouldn’t mean as much if the earbuds didn’t sound good — but they do. They sound even better than the Dash earbuds, which at times offered muddy sound and were always too bass-heavy for my liking.

The company dialed back the bass response on the Headphone, and the result is a really balanced-sounding set of earbuds. There’s still enough bass to give you a kick now and then, but there’s much more depth across the rest of the spectrum.

I’ve had one particular album (WorryJeff Rosenstock’s newest manic thrasher of a disc) on repeat during most of the last few weeks, and I did most of that listening on both the Dash and some standard wired earbuds. With the Headphone, though, I started noticing all sorts of sounds that I had missed. I heard the sustain on the piano part of the opening track that had previously been lost in the details. Subtle echoes on vocals and drums finally made it into the mix. There was an entire vocal sample that loops on the album’s closing track that I didn’t hear once in all those first listens.

For Bluetooth-connected earbuds that cost $149, these sound fantastic. They’re also much lighter than the Dash, and therefore far more comfortable to wear. They feel more secure in your ear, since there's less weight pulling them away from your ear canal. With this in mind they'd probably make a good pair of earbuds for running or working out — just know that Bragi says they're "sweatproof," not fully waterproof like the Dash.

You can use them for a lot longer, too. Bragi advertises about six hours of battery life with the Headphone, and the earbuds hit that mark easily. On one day, I spent an hour using them on my commute, got into the office and used them to take a phone call, then went back to listening for two more hours, and was still well over 50 percent.

But Bragi’s newest earbuds aren’t without their problems. The biggest issue is that Bragi replaced the touch-sensitive controls of the Dash with three physical buttons on the right earbud. Distinguishing which button you’re touching takes a while to get used to, but the real problem lies in the fact that you’re pushing the whole earbud further into your ear any time you want to use those buttons to play, pause, or tweak the volume.

BRAGI’S MADE SOME SACRIFICES TO CUT COSTS

This problem was mitigated after a few days, because the buttons wore in and I got used to how little pressure they need to register a press. But it’s still an uncomfortable experience at times, and it forced me to take my phone out of my pocket more than I thought I would.

The move to three physical buttons also caused me a bit of interface confusion. You’re supposed to turn these earbuds off every time you put them back in the case — with the Dash, they automatically turned off, but the Headphone lacks this feature. (This is a problem if you also leave the "audio transparency" feature on, because when you slide the case closed the microphones will feed back and create a piercing squeal. The silver lining is that this audio pass-through mode is more refined than it was on the Dash.)

There’s also a bit of a learning curve with this three-button approach. For example, you touch and hold the play / pause button to turn the earbuds on and off, but you also have to touch and hold the same button to put the earbuds in Bluetooth pairing mode. I’ll be the first to admit the Dash’s menus were not easy to navigate, either — but at least on the Dash, you weren’t pushing the earbuds into your ear canal while you tried to decipher the menu system.

I REALLY WISH YOU COULD CHARGE THE BUDS WITH THE CASE

Another drawback is with the Headphone’s carrying case. It looks just like the Dash’s case, only a bit smaller, and the earbuds magnetically snap into place, which is a nice touch. But unlike the Dash carrying case, the one that comes with the Headphone doesn’t have a battery inside. That means that, should you burn through that six-hour battery life, you won’t have any extra juice to bring the earbuds back to life — you’ll have to put them in the case and then plug the case in to charge them back up.

One problem that was only slightly improved from the Dash is the microphone experience. The Headphone will pick up your voice better than the Dash ever did, but only in quiet indoor settings. If you’re outside, especially if it’s windy, the microphone does too poor a job for phone calls, and it won’t even come close to recognizing what you’re trying to dictate or say to Siri. There's a reason Apple’s first generation of AirPods have that stem, and it’s because it’s hard to pick up a voice from an earbud that's in your ear.

The last issue with these earbuds is that they work much better with your phone than they do with a laptop. When I connected them to my MacBook Pro, I experienced far more obvious connection and syncing issues, and I eventually gave up on using them this way. If you’re looking for wireless earbuds that can handle multiple devices really well, you’re better off waiting for something like what Apple offers with its W1-equipped wireless products.

These all might be deal-breakers for some people. But let me get something straight: right now, you’ll be happier with these wireless earbuds than basically any other pair on the market. It’s a very underdeveloped technology, so if you want to be an early adopter, you’re going to have to put up with some problems.

The Headphone is really two steps forward and one step back for Bragi. By removing the touch-sensitive strips in favor of physical buttons, the company has introduced some awkward interactions. And it also dropped one of the best things about the Dash, which was that the earbuds were always charging when you stowed them away in the case.

But those moves likely helped Bragi cut the price of the Headphone down to half what the Dash costs. With that in mind, these feel like worthy tradeoffs. But they’re only worthy because Bragi finally did what it has promised for years. The company went and made truly wireless earbuds that actually work.

ALBUM REVIEW: Oritse Femi – “Corporate Miscreant

Posted By: Unknown - 22:00:00

Artiste – Oritse Femi
Album – Corporate Miscreant
Features – Kosere, White Man, Citiboi, Shokah, Reekado Banks, Flekta Man, HHS
Producers – Dabeat, Hycienth, BeatByBen, Obodo, Puffy Tee, Citiboi, Young D
Label – MSN Gang/Arogunmenite Sounds (2016)
Duration – 72 minutes

Corporate Miscreant is the Musical Taliban’s fifth studio album. Oritsefemi has been in the industry for quite some time and it is surprising he is still on the B-list. I don’t know what inspired the album title but I strongly doubt that it is a track on the album. With the only notable name on album being Reekado Banks, Oritsefemi did little on collaboration.

Corporate Miscreant is a compilation of efforts from 6 producers. Below is an objective tour of the album.

No Dutty: There is just something about this track I love, its tempo is very different, Oritsefemi tried to rap on this and it was not all that bad, proper introduction.

Happy Day: From the name you can guess what it would sound like, it is a typical jolly good track, groovy but nothing special.

Eyo: Anyone who remembers the popular ‘eyo’ song can relate to this. This track is a remake of that song; it is basically a tribute to Lagos and the eyo masquerade.

Baby Boo: With his voice, you already know that Oritsefemi can slay any love song, which is exactly what he did here.

On Rewind: Started out like the track had a message to deliver until the beat kicked in and then he went dance hall on it, another confusing track on album.

Freestyle: The track is a bit confusing, it sounded like freestyle but it actually isn’t. It was simply a total waste of studio time.

Korrekt ft. Kosere: Oritsefemi should know not all songs must be on the album; this song had no business on the track list.

Sanumi: Heard this song and I did not know when it ended. Maybe it should not have been included. Oritsefemi was making an attempt to bring back the ‘flog politican koboko’ vibe but it was not as good.

Ongbalarami: Oritsefemi knows how to slay a galala sound. This is exactly what he did here the only flaw here is that he started chanting ‘gomina’ and it had me confused about the song title, maybe he recorded the song immediately after dropping the gomina track.

Awo Ewaa: This track has a good a message as well as good tempo. I noticed the chemistry between Oritsefemi and Dabeat on every song they worked on.

Olo Noni: This is one of those tracks to listen to if you are feeling down and need your spirit lifted. It is one of the few tracks with a strong message on this album.

Baby Oku: This track should not have made the list. Oritsefemi had nothing to offer on this track.

Emi Ni ft. White Man, Citiboi & Shokah: Okay, so this track was supposed to sound hardcore, which it did but the problem here is the track was bit too crowded. Also Oritsefemi got lost within the sound, he had very little to do here.

Mr Gomina ft. Reekado Banks: When you have Reeky tom tom on a track you should expect a sick sound. Also, kudos to Dabeat for the flawless production.

Omidan: At first I was enjoying the ride on this song until I heard ‘row, row, row your boat’, I just gave up on the song. It would have been a decent track, if only it had a better hook.

Ara N Bada ft. Flekta Man: A typical Oritsefemi song, nothing much to say here.

God Pikin: Oritsefemi returned to his hometown. He used his native tongue in conveying his message on this track. From what I could deduce, the track is gospel.

Ile Aiye ft. HHS: Channelling Fela’s spirit, Oritsefemi was speaking wisdom on this track with the help of singer HHS.

Fine Woman: This is probably one of my favourite tracks; it was all shades of good sound. The only flaw is it sounds a bit like Patoranking’s my woman, my everything.

Knack Am: An average track, at first it sounded like a high life but the drum was way too fast for the piano.

Give Thanks: This track was a closing remark to the album and I must say there is really no better way to end the album than with a gospel song about appreciation.

One thing, despite not having any A-list or B-list producer on this album, the production did not suck. If you have been a loyal fan of Oritsefemi since day zero, then it won’t be hard to digest this album. Although he failed to deliver on a couple of tracks, all in all it is a good album.

Rating – 2.5/5

wOw! Chelsea’s Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois Is Earning £100,000 Per Save For Chelsea… See Analysis!

Posted By: Unknown - 22:28:00

The Blues goalkeeper has barely been tested since the start of the season, with Antonio Conte’s side on a run of six clean sheets in a row in the Premier League

The Belgium international, whose salary is £120,000 a week, has barely been called upon to make a stop during Chelsea’s impressive run of six wins and six clean sheets in their last six Premier League games.

Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough saw them leapfrog both Liverpool and Manchester City, but Courtois was only required to make one save in the 78th minute from an Alvaro Negredo effort.

In fact, in Chelsea’s last three games, Courtois has only had to make two saves and he has faced only 17 shots in the league this season. This is the joint fewest of any goalkeeper, alongside Southampton’s Fraser Forster.

In the last three games, Courtois has the outright record, but the statistic also offers an insight into how effective Chelsea have been at shutting out opponents since Antonio Conte took over the west London club.

Courtois was at his busiest against Manchester United, having to make five saves during his side’s 4-0 win, but the likes of Everton, Leicester City and Burnley failed to test the Belgium number one on their visits to Stamford Bridge.

The 24-year-old also has more Premier League clean sheets than any other goalkeeper so far this season, but Chelsea would need to gain eight more clean sheets to match record holders, Manchester United, who went 14 games without conceding a goal in their 2008-09 campaign.

He has gone on to earn exactly £98,823 per-save this season, but it is harsh to say that he is picking up easy money as Courtois is increasingly having to master the art of staying focused, without having much work to do.

Even with Belgium, Courtois is putting together an impressive run under Roberto Martinez as they switch to the 3-4-3 formation and has only conceded once in his last three games for his country, which stretches to only conceding once in his last nine games for club and country combined.

CHINA’S NEXTEV SAYS ITS NEW ELECTRIC SUPERCAR IS THE WORLD’S FASTEST

Posted By: Unknown - 18:26:00

This could be the world’s fastest electric car: the NIO EP9. So claims the manufacturer, China’s NextEV, which unveiled its new NIO brand of electric cars at a London art gallery today. How fast are we talking about here? NextEV, which also has a Formula E team, says its electric supercar achieved a new lap record at the the Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack, a legendary German racetrack where supercar speeds are vetted. On October 12th, the EP9 lapped the 12.9-mile (20.8-kilometer) “Green Hell” track in 7 minutes and 5.12 seconds. That’s probably thanks to its wicked 1,390-horsepower engine, because holy crap, that’s fast.

That’s a lot of information (and nationalities) in one paragraph so let’s break it down. NextEV is part of a new wave in electric carmakersthat are hoping to challenge Tesla as the top seller in the market. Others include Faraday Future,LeEcoLucid Motors, and the now-bankrupt Fisker Karma. But whether any can hope to topple Tesla from its top perch will depend entirely on their ability to sell cars in volume.

It’s not clear what NextEV’s strategy will be: mass-market cars for regular people, or luxury supercars for one-percenters? They seem to be starting with the low-volume brand building supercar to wow the market, but then who knows which strategy they will ultimately pursue. In a statement, NextEV Chair William Li said, “We believe that when the car ownership experience exceeds expectations, electric vehicles will become the natural choice for everyone, leading to a more sustainable tomorrow.”

What is clear is the Chinese startup (with an office in Silicon Valley, naturally) is emphasizing speed and performance at the outset. With four high-performance inboard motors and four individual gearboxes, the EP9 can deliver 1-megawatt of power. The supercar can accelerate from 0–124 mph (0–200 kph) in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 194 mph (313 kph). With an interchangeable battery system, the EP9 is designed to be charged in 45 minutes and has a range of 265 miles (427 kilometers).

How does that compare to Tesla’s Model X? It’s a shorter per-charge range, 265 miles compared to 315 miles for the Model X. And its 0–60 mph acceleration falls short as well, 2.7 seconds versus Tesla’s 2.5 seconds. We probably won’t know which is faster until both electric cars go head-to-head on the Green Hell.

The EP9’s design is thoroughly arresting: hulking wheels, a sleek physique, and a piercing face with headlights that look like slits. The sculpted haunches give it a veryMcLaren-esque appearance. This would definitely turn some heads.

They may still be upstarts, but NextEV has some big names backing its venture. Investors include Tencent, Temasek, Sequoia Capital, Lenovo, TPG, and others. And naturally, the company has aspirations in the world of autonomous driving. In October, NextEV applied for an Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit from the California DMV to begin testing self-driving cars on public roads. NextEV says the EP9 features an “integrated e-control structure and sensor system layout” that can eventually accommodate autonomous driving technology.

SNAP SPECTACLES REVIEW: FUN THAT'S TOTALLY WORTH THE TROUBLE

Posted By: Unknown - 18:22:00

One of the moments I cherish most in my life repeats itself almost daily. It happens when I come home after a long day of work. After around 12 hours of being away, my dog Moose absolutely loses it when she sees me. She jumps around, hops up on the bed, and her heart races a mile a minute.

I’ve always wanted to capture this moment on video, both because it’s hilarious and because I know I’m going to miss it a lot some day. But two problems always get in the way. One is that my dog is hyper-aware of cameras. Any time I pull out my phone to shoot what she’s doing, she reacts and ruins the moment. (Thanks, Moose.) And the other is that holding a phone changes that moment — I wind up with one fewer free hand, I worry that I have her in frame, and I’m also putting an $800 piece of technology at risk.

This week, I finally captured that moment — not because I strapped a GoPro to my head, or because I set up a creepy security camera. I captured it by wearing a pair of glasses.

Spectacles are the camera-equipped sunglasses that were introduced earlier this year by the company formerly known as Snapchat. The glasses were announced at the same time that Snapchat, now known as Snap, Inc., started calling itself a "camera company."

At a really high level, Spectacles are all about giving Snapchat users a more immediate way to record videos (but not photos) that get sent right back into the app. They are supposed to remove the last few layers of friction from the already pretty frictionless process of recording video with your smartphone. Spectacles also let you capture the world around you without removing you from that world. And Snap thinks Spectacles will let you capture things from a unique perspective.

Spectacles are going to up many people's Snapchat game, but I can't get past the power of capturing moments I never had a chance to capturepic.twitter.com/htjmMAEn8Z

After using Spectacles for about a week, I found most of these things to be true. The glasses offer the quickest means of recording a short 10- to 30-second video clip, shorter than even the amount of time a GoPro would take were you to have one strapped on at all times. Spectacles make it possible to capture those moments without needing to stare at or through your phone’s screen — though the time you spend away from your phone when using Spectacles winds up going right back into the process of reviewing and posting those videos to Snapchat.

There are a few other frustrations, too. But they feel minor when compared to the power of the point of view that Spectacles afford. The eye-level perspective is fantastic, especially when you’re using Spectacles around friends and family, or interacting with something that’s an arm’s length away. That POV is different enough to change the intensity of the emotional connection to the footage you capture — even if you never wind up sharing it with your friends or posting it to your Snapchat story.

This is true even for the most boring Spectacles footage. Videos I shot while picking up my laundry, making coffee, or taking out the trash look and feel more like memories than any other kind of video I've recorded in the past. With that in mind, though, it's the videos like the ones I shot of Moose that I'll want to keep on my phone or my computer for years.

THE MOST INITIALLY REMARKABLE THING ABOUT SPECTACLES IS HOW MUCH SNAP GOT RIGHT

The most initially remarkable thing about Spectacles is how much Snap got right in making them. At the most basic level, Spectacles are very good sunglasses. They’re a bit tight on my relatively big head, but that’s to be expected for a one-size-fits-all kind of product. And even though they were tight, it didn’t stop me from wearing them for entire days spent walking around the city.

The plastic frames don’t feel cheap or brittle, and yet they’re also not heavy — even though they’re full of electronics. I expected them to be front-heavy if anything, but they’re well balanced and comfortable. Other than the fact that you can see the circles in each corner of the glasses, they feel as normal as any other relatively inexpensive pair of sunglasses.

Snap also deserves some praise for the Spectacles carrying case, too. Shaped like an oversized Toblerone box, it has a slightly cushy Snapchat-yellow foam exterior that should help if you ever drop the thing. You’ll want to keep the case with you, too, because it carries four extra charges, and heavy use (snapping 20 or 30 10-second videos in a half hour) will put a serious hurt on Spectacles’ battery. Really light use — think an average of a video per hour — can stretch the battery to about a day. (Spectacles will also drain your phone’s battery, since it’s using Bluetooth to transfer the videos. In my experience, this meant I was left with at least 10 percent less battery every day on my iPhone 7 compared to my normal usage.)

Spectacles come with a magnetic USB 2.0 charging cord that you can connect to the glasses themselves, and the magnetic end also snaps onto the case to charge it, too. The best way to charge the glasses is inthe case, though, where — when folded up — they magnetically attach and stay in place.

At $129, Spectacles are not exactly cheap. That price is on par with a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, and the quality is probably a notch or two below them. The words "fun" and "toy" were used a lot by Snap CEO Evan Spiegel when he first described Spectacles to The Wall Street Journal in September. But he was right to use those words.

If you have the money, and are lucky enough to live near one of the pop-up vending machines, know that Spectacles are a total blast to use. They require so little extra thought and planning — just keep them on and tap the button on the left any time you want to record a video. There’s a little light inside the glasses that glows while you’re recording, and it blinks when you’re almost out of time. When it comes to shooting video, Spectacles couldn't make it any easier.

SPECTACLES ARE A WAY FOR SNAP TO STUDY THE REACTION TO WEARABLE CAMERAS

But Spectacles are as much about your personal experience as they are a sign of Snap, Inc. testing the waters when it comes to wearable cameras. One of the many reasons that the company chose to slowly roll these out — besides just to generate hype — is to carefully gauge how people to react to the omnipresence of cameras in social settings.

Spiegel even admitted this to theWSJ. He said that Spectacles are "about [Snap] figuring out if it fits into people’s lives and seeing how they like it." And if they do, it’ll be because a few particular design choices that Snap made. One is the yellow circles in each corner of the glasses — instead of hiding the tech in these glasses, Snap chose to draw your eye to the fact that there’s a camera.

And then there’s the recording light, which makes your choice to record something a public one. The glasses announce that you’re shooting a video, and people will notice this even if they don’t quite understand what it means. It’s a responsible design choice, and over time it could make people more comfortable with the idea of being recorded in this way. That’s why the glasses use spinning white lights instead of the more ominous steady red light that has signaled "recording" for decades.

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS — SURPRISE! — THE SOFTWARE

If anything drags down the experience of Spectacles, it’s the software. Snapchat has always been a (somewhat purposely) byzantine app, but I never had much trouble navigating when I used it regularly. But that was before Snapchat rolled out "Memories," which allow users to save all the photos and videos they shoot while also opening up access to the ones already stored on their phone’s camera roll.

That update dramatically changed the app’s user interface, as it added a whole bottom drawer’s worth of tabs, panels, and media libraries. It’s here that you interact with the videos that you shoot with Spectacles, and it’s not the easiest process to parse — especially compared to how quickly you can send or post a photo or video the standard way in the app.

First, you have to wait for those videos to transfer, which can take anywhere from a few minutes to a half-hour, depending on how many videos you shot in succession, or whether or not your phone stays connected to the glasses over Bluetooth.

Videos that run the full 10 seconds normally take about 10 seconds to transfer, but things can get wonky if your phone stops talking to the glasses. At one point I wound up with 53 videos that needed transferring, and the transfer took more than 30 minutes because of a few Bluetooth interruptions that forced me to reset my phone and eventually re-pair Spectacles. That process also drained most of the battery from the Spectacles, from about 80 percent down to around 10 — though you can keep the glasses in the charging case while you transfer if you need.

Once the videos have transferred, you have to tap a tiny circle at the very bottom of the camera screen in the app to bring up the Memories drawer. And from there, all the videos appear in a tab next to your camera roll and anything else you’ve shot in the Snapchat app.

Then, in the Spectacles tab, the videos that have transferred over are grouped by day. To access individual videos, you have to tap the right day, then either successively tap through them one by one, press and hold to be able to swipe through them all, or press and hold and then tap a menu to view thumbnails of all the videos. Then it’s another set of taps if you want to draw on or add emoji to that video, and again to finally send it to your friends or publish the video to your daily story.

SPECTACLES FEEL ODDLY DISCONNECTED FROM SNAPCHAT’S AUGMENTED REALITY FEATURES

This is all very un-Snapchat-like. Snapchat was always about taking photos and videos, mashing them up with text or doodles, and sending them out quickly. The interface is confusing to newcomers, but fast for people who are adept at it. Spectacles adds a ton of weight to that process.

I found the best way to use Spectacles is to shoot a bunch as you go and then find time to review those videos later in the day, picking the best to post long after when they were shot. It’s a decidedly less impulsive and spontaneous way of using the app, and it makes me wonder whether or not Spectacles are made with the core Snapchat user in mind — the one who spends most of their time adding dog ears and rainbow puke filters to their selfies and sending them to their friends.

Spectacles also feel oddly disconnected from Snapchat’s augmented reality features. There’s no way to apply lenses to faces — or the app’s new "World Lenses" — after you shoot a video with Spectacles. So is Snap trying to modify those users’ behavior with Spectacles? Or is it trying to draw new people (or perhaps users who have jumped ship to Instagram Stories)? I don’t know the answers to these questions, and I’m not sure Snap does, either — in fact, it seems like a big part of what the company is trying to suss out with this limited run.

Software stupor aside, the experience of using Spectacles is so unique and fun that I was willing to look past the hassle. If smartphones have decimated traditional digital camera usage because of how close they hew to the adage of "the best camera is the one you have on you," then Spectacles has a chance to let you literally embody that sentiment.

Do I wish it shot photos? Yes. Do I wish the video quality was better? Yes, though Snapchat isn’t known for being a place to share high-quality videos in the first place. (That said, the original ad for Spectacles tries to sell the glasses as a way to capture important moments in your life without juggling a camera, so this is at odds with the quality that Spectacles currently affords — even the "HD" versions, which involve an even more finicky Wi-Fi process to transfer to your phone.)

THEY SAY "THE BEST CAMERA IS THE ONE YOU HAVE ON YOU." WELL...

With all this in mind, the current version of Spectacles feels totally worth the asking price if you’re a heavy Snapchat user, or if you feel the desire to be one. You can save the videos to your camera roll and post them to other apps. But you lose the ability to rotate your phone around the centerpoint of the video, which is a fun interaction that makes the videos feel more alive. And the Snapchat app exports the circular Spectacles videos inside a square white border, so you either have to crop in on every video or just live with it if you’re posting it to, say, Instagram.

(Considering Snap’s early marketing for Spectacles — which consisted of billboards scattered around the country that featured eyeball-shaped logos — the way these videos look off-platform feels extremely deliberate. It’s as if you’re trading a free ad for Spectacles for the ability to post the video to another platform.)

The combination of hands-free use, eye-level POV, 60fps motion, wide angle lens is a total game changerpic.twitter.com/iGfT1kfWMD

— Sean O'Kane (@sokane1)November 18, 2016

Spectacles are so good that it’s a shame the access to them is so limited. But I’m also glad Snap is taking this one step at a time. It’s like a bizarro version of the Google Glass beta: a limited rollout, but done in a way that fosters fascination — and hopefully some critical thought — instead of just revulsion.

Those who can get their hands on Spectacles will be the beta testers of a whole new approach to photography, one that is capable of capturing previously elusive moments in a uniquely engaging format. They’ll also be the first to take a crack at establishing the social norms that surround this kind of photography, and they’ll also be the first to have a say in whether it succeeds or fails.

The rest of us will have to wait — though maybe not long. Spectacles might be limited run, but if we’ve learned anything from the battles Snap has been waging with the likes of Instagram and Facebook, it’s that Silicon Valley isn’t above copying a great idea.
